HOLLYWORD - On the Set Vocabulary/Logs
In class, I will introduce the students to their new academic vocabulary word lists as they are listed in the units/lessons in SpringBoard, the text. This is a classroom assignment! At home, I would encourage the students to study the meanings of their words for their quizzes when they are scheduled throughout the school year. However, the tests will not be scheduled every Friday; it will depend on the units/lessons introduced from SpringBoard. I will let the students & parents know in advance. The students will have an opportunity in class to independently look up each definition, use all words correctly in the context of a sentence, and write their synonyms & antonyms. During the week, the students will also work with a partner & in a group to complete engaging vocabulary activities on their word lists to reinforce what they've learned. The students will also do a self-assessment. The academic vocabulary lists will be selected from the units in SpringBoard; we will also discuss the vocabulary introduced in the three whole class homework novels the students will be reading during 6th grade reading this school year. When our bulletin boards are hung in our classroom, I will create a visual "Hollyword Wall of Fame" in front of the room for the students to view.
*PLEASE SUPPLY EITHER A POCKET DICTIONARY OR ONE ON AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE BY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th.
Because their is a direct correlation between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension, the students are creating a glossary/log to enter all of their academic vocabulary words. They're also labeling them as unknown, acquainted, and established, so they can refer back to them throughout the course of the school year and see their growth.
Three types of vocabulary words:
- Unknown: the word is completely unfamiliar and its meaning is unknown
- Acquainted: the word is somewhat familiar; the student has some idea of its basic meaning
- Established: the word is very familiar; the student can immediately recognize its meaning and use the word correctly
